Be Storm Ready & Disaster Preparedness

During heavy downpours, we will likely see some localized street flooding, which will subside as the water dissipates into the storm drains and creeks. If you see street flooding in the absence of a heavy downpour, please contact General Services at 916-727-4770.

Sandbag Information

Citrus Heights provides sandbags for CITRUS HEIGHTS RESIDENTS ONLY. Please bring proof of residency, such as ID or utility bill, when you come to pick up sandbags. If you do not live in Citrus Heights, please contact your local agency (City of Roseville, Sacramento County, Placer County, etc.) for sandbag information.

Citrus Heights residents may come to City Hall at 6360 Fountain Square Drive during normal business hours (Monday - Friday 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM), to pick up sandbags to be self-filled at the following the locations:

  • C-Bar-C Park (8275 Oak Avenue)
  • City Hall located at 6360 Fountain Square Drive

The City will provide sand at these two locations throughout the 2022-2023 storm season. We strongly encourage residents who have experienced flooding in the past to prepare well in advance of the expected rainfall this year. Please bring your own shovel to fill your bags at the sand locations.

The City encourages residents to limit the quantity of bags to the amount they can safely transport in their vehicles. The filled sandbags weigh approximately 30 pounds each (filled halfway). More than 10 bags is too much weight for most cars; and 20 bags is generally the limit a half-ton pickup truck can safely transport.

When you come to City Hall to pick up sand bags:

  • Bring ID or proof of Residency.
  • Plan ahead. Sand piles and sandbag supplies can be depleted quickly in an emergency.
  • Sand filling stations are self-serve only. No staff is available to help fill bags or load vehicles.
  • Bring your own shovel, the city will not provide shovels for residents to use.
  • Do not overload your vehicle.

Residents may also contact local home improvement stores to purchase sand and sandbags. You can download instructions for sandbag filling and laying (PDF). For additional information or questions, please contact the General Services Department at 916-727-4770 or email General Services.

This information may change, subject to sand and sandbag availability.

Prevent Clogged Drains Extra Leaf Pick Up Place up to 6 bags of leaves next to organic waste cart

Keep Storm Drains Clear

Debris such as litter, leaves, and twigs can prevent water from flowing into storm drains freely and can cause localized flooding. To prevent clogged storm drains, dispose of yard waste properly and use your organic/green waste bin for weekly collection. Citrus Heights residential customers may also set out up to six extra bags of leaves only curbside on your regular collection day each week at no extra charge during the months of November, December, and January.

If you see a clogged storm drain, please contact the General Services Department at 916-727-4770. Due to the volume of calls, there is limited staff available during a storm event. If it is safe to do so, you may attempt to remove the debris with a garden rake. Current radar images of rainfall in the Sacramento region are available from the National Weather Service (NWS).
